Codex Takes Over Shopify: A Shopify AI Toolkit Guide

Open Codex, build your store, and get to work: bring Shopify operations into your AI workflow with the AI Toolkit, plugins, Skills, and MCP.

Codex Takes Over Shopify: A Shopify AI Toolkit Guide

There have already been quite a few guides on connecting Shopify to AI Agents. As Shopify AI and every kind of Agent move at breakneck speed, using AI to run Shopify is becoming smoother and easier. This is a beginner-friendly guide to running a Shopify store with AI Agents.

If you have not read the earlier material, start with 2026 Beginner's Guide to Shopify AI Agents + Skills, then come back here.

Shopify AI Toolkit

Shopify AI Toolkit brings together capabilities such as plugins, Skills, and MCP.

Shopify AI Toolkit documentation and capability overview

Let us first cover the background for people who want to understand how and why this works.

In April 2026, Shopify CLI added capabilities such as Store Auth and Execute. That means merchants can operate a store with CLI commands: actions a person performs with a mouse in a graphical interface can also be reproduced by an AI or developer through commands.

That rapidly expanded Shopify's AI scenarios. AI Agents can run CLI commands to sign in to your store and quickly execute store instructions. Once the infrastructure was ready, AI also needed a set of “instructions” explaining which Shopify commands and actions are available. That is where Shopify AI Agent Skills come in. MCP is an earlier connection capability for developers.

Shopify Plugin integration interface

Newcomers may feel a little lost, but plugins are the smoothest place to start. Think of a plugin as an all-in-one package: it can include Skills, scripts, configuration, and Hooks, so you can connect a store with as little setup as possible.

Shopify is now available as a plugin in Codex, Claude Code, Antigravity CLI, Cursor, Hermes, and VS Code. Most of these can connect through a graphical app: you may not even need to install commands—click once, install, and connect your store.

Using ChatGPT Codex as the example, it takes three steps:

Install and authorize

Wait for the Auth window, then connect your store.

Done. Time to enjoy it. If you already know CLI, I will not belabor it.

What About Other AI Agents?

Maybe you prefer Coding Agents such as Opencode, or you are learning tools like Qoder, Workbuddy, and Trae. Even without an official plugin integration, you can use the official Skills or MCP instead, with almost the same experience.

Installing Skills

Tell your Agent this in the chat window:

Help me install this set of skills from https://github.com/Shopify/shopify-ai-toolkit. First check whether node, npm, npx, and git are available. If any required dependency is missing, automatically install or repair it non-interactively. Then run this exact non-interactive command to globally install all skills in the repository:

npx --yes skills add Shopify/shopify-ai-toolkit --skill "*" --global --yes

Installing MCP

If you prefer MCP, add it manually with this JSON configuration:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "shopify-dev-mcp": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@shopify/dev-mcp@latest"]
    }
  }
}

After installing Skills or MCP, restart your Agent and describe your business need in the chat window. The Agent can recognize the need and call the relevant Skills or MCP.

Advanced: What Can I Actually Ask AI to Do?

Once your store is connected to an AI Agent, many newcomers ask: “What can I actually do with it?” For many people, “it can do anything” almost means “I do not know how to do anything,” because they do not know what to ask AI to do.

First, keep talking to AI about your problems and needs. My takeaway is: at this point, talk to it like an oversized baby. AI can do things that are beyond your expectations; you may have no idea how it will genuinely solve a problem for you—except for “I want instant explosive sales.”

Second, look for Skills built by communities and other practitioners. For example, Selofy Skill Hub collects practical Shopify Skills that are open source, free, safe, and friendly to newcomers. Many Skills are still being improved: onboarding, execution, and professional depth.

New and experienced users alike are welcome to join the Shopify wave. Combine supply capability with AI-enabled access to technology: open a store and build.
