❝A plain-English rundown of every Shopify update in August — what changed and why it matters for your store.❞
International
Managed Markets Drops DDU Support, Eligible Markets Switch to DDP Automatically [Ref 1][Ref 2]
August 11
From August 24, Managed Markets markets that also support DDP in a given country or region no longer support DDU. Affected markets automatically switch to charging duties and taxes at checkout, instead of making customers pay the carrier or customs on delivery.
「Scope」: Merchants using Managed Markets where the market also supports DDP. Not every market is guaranteed to switch automatically.
「Do you need to act?」: If you want customers to keep paying on delivery, you need to turn off Shopify Managed Markets before August 24; otherwise no action is needed, but re-check the tax and duty wording on product pages, the checkout page and in your support scripts.
For Chinese sellers, this directly changes displayed landed prices and the timing of collection in European, US and other markets — check your margins and return policy alongside it.
Buy DHL Express Labels Directly in the Admin for UK, DE, FR, IT and ES [Ref 3]
August 13
Merchants in the UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain can buy DHL Express domestic and international labels in the Shopify admin, with customs documents generated automatically for international orders.
「Scope」: Merchants located in those five countries; available on any Shopify plan, no third-party app, DHL monthly fee or separate DHL account needed — you pay per label.
「Do you need to act?」: Just choose to create a label when fulfilling an order. A China-based entity doesn't get access to this regional service just from this update, but teams with an entity or fulfillment point in those countries should check.
US Tax Now Calculated by Actual Fulfillment Location [Ref 4][Ref 5]
August 24
Tax on US orders now uses the shipping location selected by order routing; pickup orders use the pickup location. With multi-location fulfillment, the order record also shows which location was used for the calculation.
「Scope」: Merchants selling into the US with multiple fulfillment locations or local pickup; rates still depend on specific state and local rules.
「Do you need to act?」: Generally nothing to enable, but check order routing, warehouse addresses and tax reports, especially for multi-location US orders.

Inventory and Logistics
Inventory Reports Switch to "On-Hand" Instead of "Available" [Ref 6][Ref 7]
August 14
From September 1, the inventory analytics model uses on-hand quantity: units physically held in the warehouse, units committed to open orders, and units currently unsellable. The previous available quantity only counted sellable stock.
「Scope」: Anyone using inventory reports, ShopifyQL, or apps that depend on the inventory analytics model; historical data isn't backfilled and still shows the old definition before September 1.
「Do you need to act?」: Proactively brief finance, purchasing and data teams to re-interpret inventory turnover, days of inventory, ABC analysis and month-end inventory value. App developers should also check FROM inventory and FROM inventorybylocation queries.
Order Taxes Recalculate Automatically After Changing the Shipping Address [Ref 8]
August 13
After changing an order's shipping address in the admin, Shopify recalculates tax based on the new destination — no need to cancel and rebuild the order.
「Scope」: Orders where you edit the address in the admin; the final tax amount still depends on destination, items and tax settings.
「Do you need to act?」: No configuration needed, but support and order teams should add "verify tax after an address change" to their process, and any ERP or order app should test tax updates.
Checkout and Payments
Signed-In Customers Default to Their Last Payment Method [Ref 9]
August 21
When a signed-in customer checks out again, Shopify remembers and preselects the payment method they used last time, cutting repeat selection.
「Scope」: Only D2C and B2B checkout flows where saved payment methods are enabled.
「Do you need to act?」: No configuration needed; check custom checkouts, payment extensions and mobile flows to confirm the preselected method doesn't conflict with your business rules.
Recommended Checkout Field Settings Are Viewable in the Admin [Ref 10][Ref 11]
August 13
Eligible stores can view Shopify's recommended settings for checkout fields, helping collect more complete customer data while minimizing friction.
「Scope」: Eligible stores only; recommendations vary by region and checkout settings.
「Do you need to act?」: Merchants need to review and decide whether to adopt them; don't treat the recommendations as tax or privacy compliance advice, and test against local regulations and conversion data before changing anything.
Analytics
New Shopify Payments Balance Activity Report [Ref 12][Ref 13]
August 22
Under Finance > Documents > Shopify Payments activity report or the Payouts page, you can view opening balance, transactions, fees, payouts, net change and closing balance by date and payout currency, and export to PDF.
「Scope」: Requires Shopify Payments; only the store owner or staff with "View payouts" permission can see it. Third-party payment processors and Shopify subscription fees are not in this report.
「Do you need to act?」: Use it proactively for month-end close, reconciliation or handing off to your accountant. It's a balance activity report — not an income statement, and not a line-by-line bank deposit detail.
Shop Campaigns Data Available Through ShopifyQL [Ref 14][Ref 15]
August 10
Shop Campaigns data — ad spend, sales, orders, ROAS, average order value and acquisition cost — can be viewed alongside other marketing channels in the same analytics stack.
「Scope」: Analytics apps can query shop_campaign_insights via shopifyqlQuery, requiring existing read_reports permission; custom reports can hook in the same way.
「Do you need to act?」: Merchants can view it in the relevant admin reports with no configuration; teams using Triple Whale, Northbeam or custom BI should confirm their vendor's integration timing. For app developers with an existing ShopifyQL integration, the official note says no new permissions are needed.
POS
Redesigned POS Channel Home Makes the Editor and Store Data Easier to Find [Ref 16][Ref 17]
August 17
The Point of Sale channel page now previews your lock screen, customer display and receipts in one place, with an entry point to the POS editor; you can also view sales, orders, discounts and returns by today, last 7 days or last 30 days, filtered by store.
「Scope」: All merchants using the Point of Sale channel; staff need analytics permission to see the analytics area.
「Do you need to act?」: No migration needed — check store configuration straight from the Point of Sale channel page; grant store managers the analytics permissions they need.
Printed Receipts Move to the New Editor [Ref 18]
August 11
Sale, return, exchange, gift and gift card receipts can be managed in a single content editor, supporting branded headers and footers, return policy, signature lines and regional tax ID fields. Gift receipts no longer show item details, making bulk printing easier.
「Scope」: Shopify POS stores; merchants using Liquid-customized receipts must migrate by January 1, 2027 at the latest.
「Do you need to act?」: Preview and configure the new templates now. Switching to the new format is irreversible; stores still on Liquid at the deadline are migrated automatically.

Admin
Bulk Create, Deactivate and Reactivate Staff via CSV [Ref 19]
August 21
You can create admin or POS staff accounts and assign PINs in one CSV upload, and bulk deactivate or reactivate existing users — handy for peak-season hiring, new store openings and quick offboarding.
「Scope」: Shopify admin users and POS staff; the entry point is Settings > Users > Import, using Shopify's sample CSV template.
「Do you need to act?」: Worth using proactively for larger teams; before uploading, check roles, PINs and your staff list so you don't bulk-assign excessive permissions.
Marketing and Growth
Shopify Forms Can Collect WhatsApp Marketing Consent [Ref 20][Ref 21]
August 6
When customers fill in a popup or inline form, they can tick WhatsApp marketing consent, and you can then use those subscribers for WhatsApp campaigns.
「Scope」: Requires Shopify Messaging and WhatsApp Business configuration; customers must explicitly opt in. Shopify's Help Center currently states plainly that businesses registered in China cannot use WhatsApp marketing through Shopify Messaging, and customers in mainland China cannot receive these marketing messages.
「Do you need to act?」: Choose the WhatsApp consent method in form settings, and check your privacy policy, regional regulations and audience sources alongside it; a plain form submission must not be treated as WhatsApp marketing permission by default.
Campaign Autopilot Supports Microsoft Advertising [Ref 22]
August 4
Campaign Autopilot can now connect or create Microsoft Advertising and allocate budget to channels like Performance Max. The feature is still early access.
「Scope」: Stores that can request early access from the Growth page; ad accounts, regions and platform review rules may still limit availability.
「Do you need to act?」: Only merchants ready to test automated media buying need to apply. Set a budget cap and verify conversion tracking and channel attribution first; don't swap out your existing media setup outright.
