Shopify Markets Prerequisites and Best Practices for Global Selling (Part 1)
Dreaming of selling globally? Before expanding to multiple countries, learn the essential prerequisites for Shopify Markets including Shopify Payments, translation apps, geolocation setup, and proper configuration.

New global sellers often have this dream:
Since I'm already selling internationally, why not conquer hundreds of countries worldwide?
Alright. I won't stop you - let's dive in.

A Reality Check First
Here's the thing: every country has different languages, currencies, payment methods, and even shopping habits.
For example, the US uses English and dollars; while the UK and Australia also speak English, they use different currencies.
European countries may share the Euro, but Germany speaks German, Spain speaks Spanish, and Italy speaks Italian.
Payment methods are even more complex - the Middle East and parts of East Asia may prefer Cash on Delivery (COD).
Still think you can conquer the world with a single click?

Essential Prerequisites
1. Enable Shopify Payments
Shopify Payments automatically converts currencies and calculates exchange rates for merchants. This solves the currency problem.
I'll say it again: setting up a Hong Kong or overseas business entity is essential for advancing in global commerce. Please, get the basics right first instead of asking endless questions that could have been avoided.
Shopify Payments does charge additional cross-border and currency conversion fees.
Without Shopify Payments, even if you select multiple countries, all prices will only display your store's default currency (e.g., British Pounds in my demo).

With Shopify Payments enabled:

2. Use Translation Apps for Maximum Localization
Some people add dozens of countries at once - but what about visitors who don't understand English? Will they buy? No.
They won't even find your store. Without proper localization, you won't have any SEO presence in target countries. (This relates to international SEO - a complex topic for later.)
At minimum, you need to translate your content properly. Check this tutorial: Shopify Translate & Adapt Complete Guide
3. Use Geolocation

You can enable manual region selection for users, as well as automatic redirection.
4. Configure Backend Settings and Policies
- Have you enabled Markets?
- Added shipping methods?
- Does your shipping policy state delivery times to target countries?
5. Please Read the Official Documentation

It has everything. Read it once, then read it again. After six months, I still occasionally read official documentation - every time I learn something new.

Only after reading will you discover more specific issues. Otherwise, I often can't even understand the questions beginners ask.
Next time, I'll walk you through setting up multi-country markets and Geolocation. Bye!
