WordPress for E-commerce? Build a Store for as Low as $200/Year!
Complete WordPress e-commerce guide! From server purchase to WP installation, Hostinger setup to money-saving tricks. Build a complete store for as low as $200/year.

Alright everyone, I'm taking the plunge and starting to explore WordPress!

Let me kick off a WP sharing and discussion series. (Disclaimer upfront: I'm a complete beginner at this, just sharing experiences, and I'll still be focusing most of my energy on Shopify.)
But our first piece of content is super practical! You'll save hundreds after reading this!
WordPress Basics Explained
WordPress actually started as an open-source, free website-building tool for bloggers, allowing many bloggers to quickly and easily set up their own blogs.

But because it's open-source, more and more contributors joined, upgrading and improving it through various enhancements and plugins, making the WordPress ecosystem incredibly rich. So WordPress now basically equals a website-building tool - if you want to, you can build any kind of website with WordPress. Like e-commerce websites for global selling!
WordPress Cost Breakdown
While WordPress is open-source and free, that doesn't mean you can build a site without spending a penny. Costs mainly include two parts:

- Server costs: $200-1000+ per year
- Plugin and theme costs: Unlimited
WordPress vs Shopify
Shopify is an e-commerce-focused SaaS (Software as a Service). It's paid, and the benefit is that because it focuses entirely on e-commerce, its optimization work and beginner-friendliness definitely surpasses WordPress.

(Otherwise, why would so many people pay to use Shopify?)
Friendliness体现在:
- No coding experience needed (drag-and-drop building)
- No server knowledge required (Shopify's official servers)
- Full e-commerce workflow and channel optimization
- Built-in payment processing with Shopify Payments
- Shopify's partnerships with various traffic channels
- Default e-commerce SEO settings, and much more
When to Consider WordPress?
Consider WordPress when you have these needs:
- You're only doing B2B, focused on inquiries: You can save money building with WordPress
- You plan to build multiple sites: Some hosting servers have fixed annual fees but allow unlimited sites
- You feel Shopify limits your product needs somehow
- You have strong hands-on, learning, and frontend skills: WordPress's high ceiling can definitely meet your needs

Let's Get Started! Buying a Server
No more talk, let's do this! Step one: get a server.
There are generally two solutions:
Solution 1: Buy an Independent Cloud Server (Not Recommended for Beginners)
Go directly to various cloud server solution providers, purchase a cloud server, and deploy it yourself by installing WordPress on your server.

Specific prices depend on region, performance, duration, etc. This is why beginners aren't recommended - you have no concept of performance parameters, and zero understanding of later server installation and maintenance (like CDN, security defense, etc.).
The benefit is more flexible control over your server usage. If performance is sufficient and you know how to use it, you can do site building, create your own cloud drive, set up various applications, and... well, you know what else.
Solution 2: Buy Integrated Managed Hosting (Recommended for Beginners)
Beginners should use this method more. Think of it this way: these service providers have their own massive server, and when someone buys the service, they allocate you some resources and pre-install WordPress for you, plus appropriate optimizations (like providing CDN, backup services, etc.).

The downside is this service can only be used for website building. Similarly, specific pricing depends on service content, performance parameters, and duration.

💰 Money-Saving Tips
Tip 1: Choose the Right Billing Country to Save on Taxes
Below shows the same service and duration but a $30 difference because the UK region forces you to pay taxes.

Tip 2: Look for Coupons
If you've studied or lived abroad, you probably know this. Or if you've done cross-border e-commerce and know about affiliate programs, you get it.

I personally search for coupons whenever spending money abroad. How? Just search! Using coupons can save you $10+.
Tip 3: Renewal Too Expensive? Use the Server Transfer Trick
These services usually have cheap first-year pricing, like $3.49/month as shown in the screenshot. But renewal will be expensive, showing $8.99/month in the fine print.

This trick was shared by a group member. Basically, when your first purchase period expires, try buying again and have them transfer it for you. I haven't tested this specifically yet, but based on policy rules and real experiences from group members, it should work fine.
Tip 4: How Long to Buy For?
My recommendation: beginners should just buy for 1 year. Trust me, if you can stick with it for a year, that's already an achievement. After a year, you can reconsider renewal, transfer, or switching to another provider.
💡 Beginner Recommendations Summary
